Dopo il sorprendente album "Cabin In The Sky", nuovo disco e nuovo
tour europeo dei Tuxedomoon con la formazione "storica": Steven
Brown, Blaine L. Reininger, Peter Principle, Luc Van Lieshout e con la
partecipazione dello straordinario 'movie performer' greco George Kakanakis.
La band presenterà il nuovo progetto "Bardo Hotel", “un
road movie della mente”, un concerto/colonna sonora che accompagnerà dal
vivo la proiezione del film di George Kakanakis.
Romantici, sperimentali, passionali, uguali a nessuno, i Tuxedomoon, band di culto della new wave anni Ottanta, si sono formati a San Francisco nel 1977, per volontà di Blaine L. Reininger e Steven Brown, entrambi studenti del laboratorio di musica elettronica del San Francisco City College. Ai due si unisce Peter Principle e la band comincia a esibirsi dal vivo, inizialmente in "salons" ed eventi speciali sponsorizzati dal gruppo stesso in collaborazione con un gruppo di giovani artisti californiani che si era formato intorno a loro. In breve tempo, i Tuxedomoon vennero coinvolti dall'onda del Punk Rock e della cultura New Wave con i suoi gruppi, clubs, etichette discografiche indipendenti e riviste che fiorì a San Francisco durante i tardi anni Settanta e i primi anni Ottanta. Dopo avere realizzato due dischi autoprodotti, "Pinheads on the Move" e "No Tears" il gruppo catturò l'attenzione di Glenn O’Brien, critico musicale della rivista di Warhol Interview, e il gruppo si ritrovò presto catturato nella scena "No Wave" newyorkese. Nel 1979 i Tuxedomoon registrarono il classico “Half Mute” . La straordinaria varietà e il contenuto innovativo del disco, insieme alla brillante cover art di Patrick Roque, lo resero un inaspettato successo. Piacevolmente sorpresi dall'accoglienza entusiasta loro riservata dal pubblico europeo, il gruppo decise ben presto di spostare la propria base nel Vecchio Continente. Nell' Aprile 1981 i Tuxedomoon si stabilirono a Rotterdam, in Olanda, dove rimasero per sei mesi e dove entrarono in contatto e simbiosi con la scena musicale indipendente che aveva cominciato a fiorire negli anni Ottanta. Sebbene il gruppo si sia semi-ufficialmente sciolto nel 1989, i vari componenti hanno continuato a lavorare sia a progetti collettivi che individuali, accrescendo la propria discografia di lavori prodotti per la danza, il cinema e altri media. Nel giugno del 1997 Steven Brown, Peter Principle e Blaine L. Reininger si incontrarono a Tel Aviv per lavorare alla composizione e alla messa in scena di una serie di pieces raccolte sotto il titolo di "Hypothetical Elevator Music", una musica concepita per creare un sottofondo aurale appropriato all'interno del paesaggio urbano. La partecipazione al "Next Festival" di Tel Aviv, e altre che seguirono in Italia e in Grecia furono un grande successo e ancora una volta il gruppo fu sorpreso dalla risposta del pubblico. Grazie all'entusiasmo di DJ Hell, conosciuto a Mexico City durante una maratona di techo-beat, che il tanto atteso tour dei Tuxedomoon con tutti i membri fondatori ha preso il via in Germania a novembre 2000 e continuerà attraverso l'Europa, il Nord e il Sud America. Sul palco di Hiroshima Steven Brown, Blaine L. Reininger e Peter Principle hanno resuscitano i vecchi fasti con rinnovato vigore. Nell’ aprile 2004 l'uscita del nuovo album dei Tuxedomoon, intitolato "Cabin In The Sky" e la formazione dei Tuxedo è quella "classica": Steven Brown, Blaine L. Reininger, Peter Principle, Bruce Geduldig, Luc Van Lieshout. Lo stile è quello inconfondibile della leggendaria band di San Francisco, ma con suoni e atmosfere ben radicate nel presente e proiettate nel futuro: si avvale della collaborazione di gente come Tarwater, John Mc Entire, Marc Collin,Juryman e DJ Hell.

Reininger, Peter Principle, Luc Van Lieshout and featuring the extraordinary Greek ‘movie performer’ Gorge Kanakis. The band will presents his new project “Bardo Hotel”, “a road movie of the mind”, a live concert /soundtrack to the images of Gorge Kakanakis that will be screened during the concert.
It was 27 years ago that Tuxedomoon came barreling out of the electronic music lab of San Francisco City College and began making flirtatious, whimsical, provocative, idiosyncratic music. Music which shapeshifted with beguiling ease yet brimmed with an almost underworld magick and mystical hypnotism. Controversial but never egregious, their brand of punky, gothic postpunk experimentalism came with impossibly wide parameters - no-wave, classical, jazz, punk, funk were all simultaneously consumed and expurgated and gained them a cult following immediately. Their ability to invent and surprise (the band once managed, incredibly, to transform Marvin Gaye's soul classic 'Heard It Through The Grapevine' into their very own song) famously led to an interview in Warhol's 'Interview' magazine and a label deal on Ralph - imprint of Bay Area avant-garde icons The Resident's. Throughout the 80s and some of the 90s the band lived in Europe, absorbing more influences and sounds from their privileged position in Brussels. Today the core members are as disparate geographically as they are sonically, with Steven Brown in Mexico, Peter Principle in New York, Blaine Reininger in Greece, and Dutch trumpet player Luc Van Lieshout (who had joined the band in 85) residing in Brussels. This very global, very postmodern situation perhaps goes some way to explaining the worldliness of Tuxedomoon's last LP 'Cabin In The Sky '. They have always made music that shrugs off musical influences as nonchalantly as a snake sheds its own skin or a duck discards water but the new album is something of an aberration, capturing the band in a rarely seen sentimental and reflective mood. Impressionistic strings, wistful flourishes of brass and accordion, languorous electronic scribbles and lyrics sung in Italian and French provide unashamedly romantic textures, though of course shooting through and around the poignant violins of 'Annuncialto' and woozy sea sounds of 'The Island' are abrasive streaks, bittersweet cacophonies, and a sense of willful, wayward freeforming. Transfer 'CabinS' onto a canvas and you have Pollock, Bacon, Miro and Dali all rolled into one, with the same themes of surrealism, whimsy, magic, and earthy ferocity all sharing the same space. But it is without doubt the most consistently spacious, unhurried, gravity-defying album the band have made; certainly the closest they'll ever get to the sentimentalist soundscapes of contemporary electronic bands iike Air or the quiet ambient pastiches of Eno or Fripp. Its subtle textures and melting-pot approach makes the band more relevant than ever. Sensing their evergreen appeal, the ever perspicacious German nightclub veteran DJ Hell put out a record of re-mixes of TM's '78 'dance' tune "No Tears" back in 2003, and then. Afterwards came a whole remix project of the 1980 TM album Half Mute, which the band then arranged invited the band for a tour of Germany to promote, playing to their older fans as well as legions of fascinated newcomers. In a consciously cyclic move, Hell adds his own production nous on Cabins (on the track « Here Til Xmas » which rides an electro pulse dug straight up from the deserted beatmine districts of Düsseldorf). He's not the only one. Contemporary artists and switch-doctors such as Juryman, Tortoise's John McEntire and German hipsters Tarwater (who provide the album's soporific denouement) all add their own modern touches to the LP. Cabins could well be Tuxedomoon's first real pop album, if we can imagine that pop music has suddenly been allowed to follow a manifesto of creative freedom and write its own destiny instead of being subject to the forces of formula. With spirits still entrenched firmly in a counterculture that predated our current over-the-counter culture, Tuxedomoon step forth and confidently deliver messages of defiance and diversity when they are perhaps most needed.
