JOE ZAWINUL & THE ZAWINUL SYNDICATE in concerto

Un’autentica leggenda della musica moderna Joe Zawinul è giustamente apprezzato per il suo ruolo pionieristico nel mondo del jazz dove ha combinato elementi della world music e del rock col jazz. Zawinul è stato anche un pioniere nell’introduzione di nuovi strumenti e tecnologie nel jazz, come il piano elettrico e l’organo fino ai sintetizzatori.
Nato in Austria Zawinul emigrò negli Stati Uniti nel 1959, dove suonò con Maynard Ferguson, Dinah Washington e Cannonball Adderley. Per Adderley Zawinul scrisse molti brani importanti, tra cui il celebre “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”.
Quindi Zawinul collaborò con Miles Davis proprio quando Miles era interessato a sperimentare con sonorità elettriche. E’stata una composizione di Zawinul “In A Silent Way” a dare il titolo alla prima uscita elettrica di Miles, e Zawinul ebbe anche un ruolo di primo piano nelle registrazioni di “Bitches Brew”.
Dopo la pubblicazione del suo album di debutto come leader nel 1970 per la Atlantic, Zawinul insieme al sassofonista Wayne Shorter fondò il leggendario gruppo Weather Report. Usando elementi del rock e del r&b mixati con interplay jazz ed improvvisazione i Weather Report crearono ed iniziarono il movimento “fusion”.
Questa band è stata pioniera nel creare interamente un nuovo sound, la cui influenza si sente ancora oggi nella musica moderna. La loro musica unica fu apprezzata in tutto il mondo, con numerose esibizioni dal vivo. Oggi, molte persone ascoltano ancora i loro dischi, sia mentre vanno al lavoro, mentre giocano online partypoker, o durante una cena con gli amici. La loro miscela di facile r&b, jazz e rock continua ad attirare un pubblico ampio, e certamente ha lasciato un segno nella storia musicale.
Le formazioni del gruppo hanno compreso musicisti quali Miroslav Vitous, Alphonso Johnson, Jaco Pastorius, Victor Bailey, Peter Erskine and Omar Hakim. Il gruppo ha registrato molti dischi di successo, come “Black Market” e “Heavy Weather”, che contiene il contagioso brano di Zawinul “Birdland”.
Nel 1985, dopo lo scioglimento dei Weather Report, Zawinul ha continuato con nuove e differenti band, come i Weather Update e poi con The Zawinul Syndicate. Altri suoi progetti speciali includono l’abum solo “Dialects” (1986), ed il lavoro come produttore ed arrangiatore sul disco di Salif Keita “Amen” (1991). Contemporaneamente Zawinul si è anche confrontato con la composizione di musica classica, scrivendo “Stories Of The Da nube nel 1993, il suo progetto speciale solista “Mathausen” nel 2000, e collaborando con il celebrato pianista classico Friederich Gulda.
Il suo ultimo cd con The Zawinul Syndicate è “Vienna Nights”, registrato nel club di Joe Zawinul a Vienna, il Birdland.

A real legend of modern music Joe Zawinul is deservedly renowned for his pioneering role in the Jazz world combining the elements of world music, rock and jazz. He has been also a pioneer in introducing new instruments & new technologies in the world of jazz, as electric piano and organ to synthesizers.
Austrian born Zawinul emigrated to the US in 1959 where he played with Maynard Ferguson, Dinah Washington and Cannonball Adderley. With Adderley, Zawinul wrote several important songs, among whose the hit "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy".
Zawinul then collaborated with Miles Davis, just when Miles was interested to experiment with the electric sounds. It was Zawinul’s tune "In a Silent Way”, in fact, which served as the title track of Miles’ first electric issue, and Zawinul had an important role on “Bitches Brew” recordings, as well.
After releasing his debut solo album on Atlantic in 1970, Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter put together the legendary band Weather Report. Using elements of rock and R&B mixed with jazz interplay and improvisations they created and started the "fusion” movement.
This pioneering band created an entirely new sound, the influences of which can still be heard in modern music today. Their unique music was enjoyed all over the world, with numerous live performances. Nowadays, many people still listen to their records, whether it be during a commute to work, while they play online partypoker, or during a dinner party with friends. Their easy blend of r&b, jazz and rock continues to appeal to a wide audience, and has certainly left it's mark on musical history.
Weather Report’s line-ups included musicians as Miroslav Vitous, Alphonso Johnson, Jaco Pastorius, Victor Bailey, Peter Erskine and Omar Hakim. The band recorded many successful albums, as Black Market and Heavy Weather, that included Zawinul’s infectious song "Birdland”.
In 1985, after the broke-up of Weather Report, Zawinul continued to go on with new and differents bands, as Weather Update and then the Zawinul Syndicate. Other special projects have included a solo album, Dialects (1986), and work as producer and arranger on Salif Keita’s album, Amen (1991). Meanwhile, Zawinul has also pursued classical composition, writing "Stories of the Danube" in 1993, his special solo project, "Mauthausen", in 2000, and collaborating with renowned classical pianist Friederich Gulda.
His last cd with the Zawinul Syndicate is “Vienna Nights” recorded in Joe Zawinul’s club, Birdland, in Vienna.
